This year we are hosting 3 events...and hopefully 4!
1 Mile Kids Race (tentative...dependent on the number of volunteers we have...)
We want kids to take part too! We are organizing a 1 mile kids race for kids 10 and under. It is at the parent's discretion if their older child would be most appropriate for the 1 mile race or the 5k or 10k. The 1 mile race is free as long as one parent or guardian (or grandparent or aunt, etc) has entered the 5k or 10k. If no adult is willing to register, we ask for a silver collection donation for your child. An adult is still required to be present on the race site on behalf of the child. Parental supervision on the 1 mile course for little kids is highly recommended. A registration form and waiver must be completed for each child.
The Course
From the start line, the kids make their way to the stairs at the back of the school. Once they've given our volunteer at the stairs a high five, they head back towards the arena, but this time go straight down the road and enter the sports grounds at the main entrance. Then they run ALL the way around the ball diamonds and horseshoe pit and back to the arena to the crowd cheering them on! Ta-da kids, you just ran a mile!
The Details
1. Start time is 10 am sharp at the back of the Lougheed Arena; parents are strongly encouraged to supervise younger children. Volunteers will be at select points on the course.
2. Kids must check in before racing so we know how many kids are taking part.
3. Pre-registration is highly preferred as this way we can be sure each kid receives their prize they worked hard for! Race day registration is allowed, but we can't guarantee they will get a prize. And I don't like tears :( Pre-register by emailing the child's name to [email protected]. Waiver to be completed on race day.
4. Waiver must be completed by parent prior to the kiddos toeing the line.
Half Marathon
This will start at 9:30 am! Details, route, and map to come!
10k Race and Prediction Race
The 10k will start once the half marathoners have ran the water tower loop, come back through the start gate, and are on their merry way out of the sports grounds (approx 9:45 am). We will be offering two kinds of awards. The first is for the speed demons and will be based on time. Fastest guy and fastest girl walk away with the goods! The second will be a prediction race. Upon registering the morning of the race, you will be asked to predict your 10k time, based on your current level of training, the weather, etc. Closest to their predicted time receives a prize (and no, you can't claim a 'fastest' prize and a 'prediction' prize). This means no watches, pacers, heart rate monitors with timing capabilities, ipods, or any other timing device. You will be disqualified from the prediction race if you have one on your person. See below for complete list of rules.
The Course (same as other years)
Starting at the Lougheed Arena, follow the walking path East toward the South East corner of the sports grounds. Exit via the little jog in the fence and go up and over the driveway into the ditch. Follow the ditch until RR 113, which you will turn South (right) on. Head South for a mile and go West (right) on TWP 434. Stay on 434 for 2 miles, which includes crossing over the oil top, cemetary road (RR 114). Keep going until you hit RR 115, at which point you will turn around and head back to the oil top. This road will take you back into town via the water tower and you can make your way to the finish line at the Lougheed Arena. Water stations will be at approx 2.75k, 5k, 6.5k, and the finish line. You are more than welcome to bring your own water on course if needed, but please no littering. (p.s. Ignore the jog past 6k in the picture, you will turn around at RR115).
As you cross the finish line, you will be given a popsicle stick with a number on it. It is important to take the popsicle stick and your bib number straight to the timers table as this is the primary way of ensuring an accurate time. Awards ceremony will begin once all walkers/runners have finished and timing results are determined.
5k Race and Prediction Walk/Run Race
The 5k race will commence once our 10kers leave the start area, at approximately 10:00 am. A snack and water station is being planned for the start/finish line, as well as a water station out on the course, at the turn around point.
We will be offering two kinds of awards. The first is for the speed demons and will be based on time. Fastest guy and fastest girl walk away with the goods! The second will be a prediction race. Upon registering the morning of the race, you will be asked to predict your 5k time, based on your current level of training, the weather, etc.
The Course (same as other years)
Leave the arena heading West, towards the school. At the end of the the school yard turn South (left) towards the water tower. Run around the water tower and then to the West (right) to the oil top road. Turn South (left) on the oil top and stay on it for a mile, until you hit TWP 434. Turn West (right) on 434 and get to the bottom of the first hill. Then turn around, climb up the hill, and follow the same route back to the arena. A water station will be at your turn around point (2.5k) and the finish line. If you need more water, feel free to take some with you, but please no littering!
As you cross the finish line, you will be given a popsicle stick with a number on it. It is important to take the popsicle stick and your bib number straight to the timers table as this is the primary way of ensuring an accurate time. Awards ceremony will begin once all walkers/runners have finished and timing results are determined.
*Sorry, we are unable to provide child care for any of the events*
Race Rules
1. All participants must sign a waiver prior to participating in the event (this is part of the online registration package). Please read it carefully and know what you are agreeing to. We plan to go rain or shine.
2. Entry fee is posted on the Race Roster site (there is an early bird and regular fee) and this is non-refundable. Sorry.
3. No cash. Race entry fee must be paid via credit card on Race Roster. If this is an issue, contact Cheryl and she will figure something out. The bottom line is everyone who wants to race, will!
4. All participants must check in the morning of the race to receive their SWAG bag and bib number. 5kers, 10kers, and halfers will provide their predicted time of completion. Please wear your bib on your front in a normal orientation. We are timing manually, and won't have time to look around for your number on your side or your back, or hanging upside down. Rules and important information pertinent to the actual race will be reviewed at that time.
5. No watches or timing devices will be allowed on course as this is in part a prediction race. Use of such an item will result in disqualification from the prediction portion. No headphones allowed because you will be walking and running on roads with traffic. We will be strict with both of these points. Strollers are ok for 5k, but the 10k is not stroller friendly (pending insurance approval again). Nordic poles are welcome for walkers, but please be aware of other participants around you while using them. No stabbing allowed.
6. Spectators welcome and encouraged! But please, do not pass on timing information. That defeats the point of the prediction race and the winner probably won't share their prize with you anyway.
7. Don't cheat and be a sport. Follow the race route. We are here to promote an active, healthy lifestyle.
8. Once you complete the race, take your super high-tech popsicle stick straight to the timing table. Failure to do so will result in a no time.
8. Once the award ceremony commences, all race times are considered final. A half hour after the awards ceremony is complete, race times are considered official and are not able to be changed. If you think we made an error, let us know as soon as possible.
9. We reserve the right to change the race at last minute, postpone, or cancel the event to maintain everyone's safety. Mother Nature is a crazy lady and we can't send people out in a freak hail storm. Our sponsors, volunteers, organization team, and participants have put a lot of effort into getting this race ready, so this will be an absolute last resort. In this event, entry fee is non-refundable, as supplies and insurance will have already been purchased.
